- Participates in `Offshore Korea 2026,` an International Offshore Energy Plant Industry Exhibition
· Promotes product and technology competitiveness utilizing 3X (DX, AX, RX) technologies
· Unveils `FLNG/FDC` models developed based on world-class offshore plant experience
- Obtains Approval in Principle (AiP) for Shuttle Tanker Battery Hybrid System
· “Optimized solution for reducing fuel consumption and carbon tax … strengthening cost competitiveness”
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from Norway’s classification society DNV (Det Norske Veritas) for a hybrid system for shuttle tankers that adds electric batteries, and will expand eco-friendly solutions that enable fuel savings.
SHI announced on the 14th that it will present its differentiated global competitiveness at the `2026 International Offshore Energy Plant Industry Exhibition,` held at BEXCO in Busan for three days from the 14th to the 16th of this month.
At this exhibition, Samsung Heavy Industries will set up a promotional booth to introduce its technological capabilities, including the design automation platform `S-EDH,` built as the first of its kind in the industry, and piping welding automation. It will also present cases of technology transformation in the three major fields of digital, AI, and robotics.
In addition, the company will exhibit a model of the Delfin FLNG currently under construction at its Geoje shipyard, along with a model of a floating data center (FDC) that can overcome the drawbacks of onshore data centers, so that visitors can see its world-class offshore plant technology at a glance.

▶ Offshore Korea is the largest offshore industry exhibition in Korea, held biennially since 2012 and hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR) and Busan Metropolitan City.
▶ The 2024 exhibition drew 170 companies from 16 countries and approximately 12,000 visitors, who explored the outlook for the global offshore energy plant market and directions for response.
Battery Power for Shuttle Tanker Thruster Positioning Control… Optimizing Energy Efficiency
On the 14th, the first day of the event, SHI received AiP from DNV for its `Shuttle tanker Battery Hybrid System.` Officials in attendance included Seung-Hyuk Kim, Head of the Machinery Engineering Team and Executive Vice President at SHI, and Hoon Choi, Head of Maritime Business Development for Korea and Japan at DNV.
A shuttle tanker is a type of crude oil carrier. Because oil fields located offshore require crude oil to be received at sea, the vessel’s position is kept constant using small propulsion devices called thrusters.
The period during which positioning control is required is generally about two to three days, and fuel must be continuously consumed during this time to operate the thrusters.
This system is characterized by additionally installing batteries on the vessel, securing an auxiliary power source for positioning control through electric power. As a result, the engine load required during positioning operation is reduced, and stable power supply is possible.
Moreover, because electricity is used, savings in fuel costs and carbon tax can be expected. Even in the event of a failure of the existing propulsion devices, power can be supplied through the battery, enabling stable operation without problems such as delays in fueling operations.
“Hybrid operation of batteries and engines enables stable power supply,” said Seung-Hyuk Kim, Head of the Machinery Engineering Team and Executive Vice President at SHI. “We will expand the development of eco-friendly solutions, including minimizing carbon emissions.”
