- Advancing FLNG technology … accelerating efforts to secure an overwhelming competitive edge
· Approval in Principle for FLNG topside design applying proprietary liquefaction system SENSE
- Demonstrating LNG value chain technology competitiveness, strengthening business cooperation in the U.S.
· Multiple gas carrier technology certifications; LNG business cooperation with U.S. companies
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will showcase its future energy technology competitiveness and business vision at Gastech.
Under the slogan “Charting the Voyage of Energy,” SHI’s key executives, including Sung-An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of SHI, and Wang-Keun Lee, Head of Shipbuilding & Offshore Division and COO of SHI, will participate in Gastech 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from today through the 17th.
Accelerating Efforts to Secure an Overwhelming FLNG Competitive Edge… Successive Certifications for SENSE Design Technology
At Gastech, SHI will accelerate its efforts to secure an overwhelming competitive edge by having its FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) design capabilities certified.
On the 15th, SHI will receive Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd’s Register (LR) for the conceptual design applying its independently developed natural gas liquefaction system SENSE to the topside of an FLNG, and will also obtain a Basic Design Review (BDR) from ABS. SHI will also sign an MOU with GasEntec, a Korean offshore plant engineering specialist, for the first licensing commercialization of SENSE.
The liquefaction system of an LNG facility is a core piece of equipment that cools natural gas to cryogenic temperatures to enable its storage and transport, and related technology has been led by some overseas companies. SHI developed and demonstrated SENSE and has been recognized for its technological capabilities by global classification societies and clients. With this certification, SHI has established a foundation for FLNG application.
Receives Multiple Gas Carrier Technology Certifications, Notable Strengthening of Business Cooperation in the U.S.
SHI will also secure multiple gas carrier technology certifications.
On the 14th, SHI will obtain a structural integrity assessment based on Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) from Korean Register (KR) for a large Type-C independent tank, taking actual operating conditions into account. On the 16th, SHI is scheduled to receive AiP from Norway`s classification society DNV for a composite support structure for the storage tanks of ultra-large gas and ammonia carriers. In addition, SHI will secure a number of other gas carrier technologies, demonstrating its competitiveness across the entire LNG value chain.
Meanwhile, SHI is also actively pursuing business cooperation with U.S. companies. On the 15th, it will sign a Professional Services Agreement (PSA) with JERA Americas of the United States for an FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) project off the coast of Hawaii, and on the 16th, it will sign an MOU with LNG developer Fulcrum LNG to target the FLNG market in five regions globally.
“Gastech, the world’s largest gas energy exhibition, is where the mega-trends of the future energy industry are confirmed,” said Sung-An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries. “Based on the LNG value chain, including FLNG, SHI will further expand cooperation with global companies and lead the market.”
