    - SHI announced that it will apply 3D digital production drawings to its shipyard. As a result, 600,000 sheets of paper will be saved and 45% of labor are expected to be reduced.

    - By utilizing more new digital technology, SHI is accelerating the transition of its shipyard to an intelligent and autonomous shipyard.

On the 30th, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced a full implementation of ‘3D digital production drawing system’ to all shipbuilding works starting from October.

Consequently, SHI will become the first-ever ‘100% blueprint-free shipyard’ in the shipbuilding industry by eliminating all previous necessities such as production drawings and inspection documents.

Using paper can cause cost losses and process delays due to frequent design changes, damage to drawings, or workers misreading the drawing. However, by utilizing the digital production drawings, SHI can △clearly verify the structure and functions of ship’s blocks, △communicate in real-time between design work and production, and △maintain high quality by boosting production efficiency with accurate information provision.

SHI is expected to save 600,000 sheets of paper annually by applying the digital production drawing system and reduce the labor needed for designing an LNG carrier by 45%, based on the installation of the equipment. By 2025, SHI will distribute 3,000 tablet PCs and improve the system’s performance to help workers adapt to the new digital and mobile working environment.

SHI has been promoting the digital transition across the overall cycle including production, design, and office work since 2019 and plans to further accelerate the transition into an intelligent and autonomous shipyard by utilizing new technologies such as AI and digital.

“Full implementation of 3D digital production drawings will serve as a main vehicle of the digital transition in the shipbuilding industry,” said Wang-geun Lee, the shipyard manager of Samsung Heavy (Vice President). “By expanding the adoption of new digital technology, SHI will continue building a smart integrated management infrastructure for the shipyard.”
