    - SHI presented its state-of-the-art net zero solution during Gastech 2024.

    - SHI will lead the future energy value chain with its unrivaled eco-friendly technology.

On the 19th, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) revealed that it has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) by the American classification society ABS for its new design of the world’s first floating blue ammonia production facility.

The floating blue ammonia production facility is a modular structure installed on a floating body offshore to △achieve a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions, △overcome challenges such as lack of land and infrastructure, and △shorten construction period, which is why it is being evaluated as an state-of-the-art eco-friendly facility with economic competitiveness.

※ Blue ammonia : By applying carbon capture and storage (CCS) system, a blue ammonia can reduce carbon emissions generated during production by more than 90%.

During the world’s largest natural gas energy exhibition ‘Gastech 2024’, held from the 17th (local time) to 20th in Houston, SHI introduced a variety of environmentally friendly technology and products such as a floating blue ammonia production facility, a floating CO2 storage facility, and an ammonia-powered containership.

On the 17th, the first day of the event, major shipowners, classification societies, and oil suppliers were invited to participate in a technology seminar under the theme of ‘Shaping Green Future, Our Commitment to Humanity’.

SHI accumulated significant achievements amidst a busy schedule as it was also awarded AiP for its newly designed CO2 storage facility, an ammonia-fueled 9,300TEU containership, and next generation LNG carrier by EU classification societies, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions (MAN-ES) for the joint development of an ammonia engine.

Along with Sung-an Choi, SHI’s Vice Chairman, executives of sales and technology division participated 2024 Gastech in person to actively introduce world’s best products such as a floating LNG production facility, LNG carriers, LCO2 carriers and so forth.

“The future of shipbuilding and offshore industry will be determined by the energy value chain created by efficient energy production and economic shipping,” said Hae-ki Jang, Chief Technology Officer of SHI. “Samsung Heavy Industries will be at the forefront of the market with its spearheading technology and products.”
