SHI Solidifies Its Position as the FLNG Pioneer by Strengthening the FLNG Products Lineup

    - SHI has received approvals in principle (AiP) for its self-developed Multi-purpose LNG Floater-Offshore (MLF-O) from three major classification societies at the 2025 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) held in the US.

    - MLF-O is a solution that enhances economic efficiency by reducing delivery times.

    - SHI completed its FLNG products lineup, optimized for nearshore and deepwater applications.

Samsung heavy has strengthened its FLNG products lineup that boasts shorter delivery times and high economic efficiency, by self-developing its Multi-purpose LNG Floater-Offshore or MLF-O.

SHI announced on May 5 (local time) that it has received approvals in principle (AiP) for the MLF-O from Norway’s DNV, the UK’s Lloyd’s Register (LR), and the United States` American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) at the 2025 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) held in Houston, USA.

MLF-O is the second standard FLNG model developed by SHI, following Multi-purpose LNG Floater-Nearshore or MLF-N, which was developed in 2023.

    * MLF-N : An LNG production facility designed for coastal areas with a wave height average of less than 2 meters.

    * MLF-O : An LNG production facility designed for deep sea areas with a wave height average of more than 9 meters.

LNG, which is in liquid form, makes a movement known as `sloshing` that resembles the motion of ocean waves. MLF-O is designed to minimize internal shocks from sloshing by arranging the cargo hold in two rows.

Samsung Heavy completed its standard LNG production facilities lineup, optimized for nearshore and deepwater applications. MLF, which is the standard FLNG model, provides advantages of reducing delivery times and providing economic efficiency compared to traditional on land production facilities.

In fact, by standardizing the unit`s LNG cargo hold and hull, SHI secured flexibility in its cargo hold capacity as it can increase from 180,000 to 220,000 cubic meters.

Samsung Heavy will push ahead with its efforts to win a number of overseas gas field development projects with its self-developed MLF-O and MLF-N, both of which provide advantages of standardization, flexibility, and high efficiency.

“MLF-O is an innovative solution that can satisfy the needs of the customers by significantly minimizing operation costs and delivery times,” said Hae-ki Jang, Chief Technology Officer (VP) of SHI. “As the first mover in the FLNG market, SHI will keep on maintain its position.”

    * OTC 2025 : A world`s largest offshore plant industry conference held from May 5 to 8 in Houston, USA. Shipbuilders and offshore facility producers gather from all around the world to participate and share new businesses and state-of-the-art offshore technologies.
