    - SHI delivered its first container ship equipped with ‘SAVER Wind’.

    - SHI secured contracts to install SAVER Wind(C) on 41 container ships to date, successfully improving fuel efficiency by 6% and securing cargo protection.

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) boasted its competitive edge in the eco-friendly and high-efficiency shipbuilding sector by adapting environmentally friendly technology to its large container ship.

On the 18th, SHI announced the delivery of its first large container ship of 15,000 TEU, which is equipped with the `SAVER Wind(C)`, SHI’s self-developed air resistance reduction device.

There were cases where SAVER Wind(C) was installed on existing container ships in 2022 but this is the first time it has been equipped on a newbuilding.

Generally, air resistance acting on a container ship is attributed to container boxes by 80%. Additionally, cargo damage occurs due to high waves in rough weather.

SAVER Wind(C) is a large structure located at the bow of the ship, designed to reduce air resistance caused by container boxes and to protect cargo from high waves during inclement weather.

Considering various forms of cargo and ship’s operational condition, SAVER Wind(C) features an arch-shaped design that effectively disperses airflow in front of and on the sides of the vessel, improving fuel efficiency by a maximum of 6%.

There is no need for a support pillar for the structure which allows for unobstructed installation of the ship’s decorative features. Also, it has an advantage of being lightweight compared to other products, so it is garnering a lot of attention from major global shipowners.

As of now, SHI has secured contracts to install SAVER Wind(C) on 41 container ships.

“SAVER Wind(C) is Samsung Heavy Industries’ self-developed technology that can realize eco-friendly and high-efficiency ship,” stated Ho-ki Lee, Managing Director (VP) at SHI’s Green Energy Technology Center. “To meet clients’ growing demands, we will make every effort to develop eco-friendly products and expand the market.”

Meanwhile, SHI is concentrating on eco-friendly vessels by developing and installing 8 types of Energy Saving Devices (ESD) such as `SAVER Air’, ‘SAVER Fin’, etc. on its vessels.
